USAID TRAINING INITIATIVES I

Sponsor: U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)
Countries: Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Haiti, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, Peru
Program focus: Faculty development, public and private sector training
Timeframe: 1982–1988
Description: Under this program, 50 post-secondary educators, public servants, and private-sector professionals were awarded scholarships for master’s degrees in the sciences, technology, health, education, agriculture, and engineering.

Direct benefits resulting from Training Initiatives I include the following:

In Paraguay, a forestry administration and extension program designed by a grantee for his university featured an internationally funded forestry data center.

In the Dominican Republic, a grantee conducted field research on soil and plant testing in his country to investigate the most efficient use of fertilizers in flooded rice. His contributions helped local farmers to increase rice production.
