Description: The Southern Italy Fellowship Program
was a cooperative agreement between USAID and LASPAU,
with assistance from the Italian Fulbright Commission.
The program enabled 47 scholars from eight universities
in southern Italy to pursue advanced research in the
United States in areas related to scientific, technological,
and entrepreneurial development. A small number of
grantees pursued graduate studies in the social sciences
and humanities. At its inception, it was the only
U.S.-sponsored program exclusively addressing the
research and development needs of continental southern
Italian universities. The fellowship program complimented
the Italian government’s desire to encourage
more sophisticated research and the adaptation of
new technologies in southern Italy through the enhancement
of existing university programs.
