Program
Countries: Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad
and Tobago
Program focus: Faculty development
Timeframe: 1980–1999
Description: UWI decided to expand
the number of faculty members who obtained advanced training by
focusing on those who already had master’s degrees and could
enhance their capabilities through short-term programs. Generally
lasting for one academic year, the programs allowed the participants
to explore and develop new methodologies, programs of instruction,
or research areas while minimizing the length of time they were
away from their duties at UWI. LASPAU designed the initiative
and placed the participants in appropriate short-term research
and academic activities. Twenty faculty members undertook advanced
training through this program. Most of them studied in the early
1980s, but grantees were also selected in 1993, 1995, and 1999.
More Information
An article in the Spring 1984 issue of the LASPAU
Informativo gave an idea of the types of short-term training
undertaken by UWI faculty through this program:
Dr. Patricia Ismond, a tenured lecturer from UWI/St.
Augustine, is studying drama at Carnegie-Mellon University, home
of the oldest drama school in the United States. She is auditing
courses in the fundamentals of directing and acting and also participating
in dramatic productions so that she can integrate the technical
components of theater into her teaching of dramatic literature
at UWI.
Dr. Margaret Demerieux, a full-time lecturer
at UWI’s
Faculty of Law since 1975, has begun self-directed study at
Harvard Law School. She is researching West Indian constitutional
law and auditing several courses on constitutional and public
law. On her return, Dr. Demerieux will bring to her departure
a whole new body of knowledge.
Ms. Meta Bogle, a tenured lecturer at UWI’s
Mona campus for the past nine years, is engaged in research
on reading at the University of Illinois Center for the Study
of Reading. Ms. Bogle is also visiting research sites, attending
professional conferences, and auditing courses; she will develop
methodologies based on her research when she returns to UWI.
