LASPAU announces Launch of the Ruperti Scholarship Program

Wilmer Ruperti, the Venezuelan-born Chairman and CEO of Maroil Trading, recently announced the first recipients of the newly created Ruperti Scholarship Program during an awards ceremony at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. The first Ruperti Scholars, Young Ryou and Andrés Blaise Jované-Flynn, are both from Panama and entering their second year of studies at the Academy.  The Ruperti Scholarship Program aims to fill an ever growing need for more well-trained professionals in the maritime industry, which has more than tripled the amount of cargo carried over the last 35 years and continues to experience extensive growth. Ruperti Scholars are selected from promising students from Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Panama, and Venezuela, with a love for the ocean and demonstrated leadership potential.

Scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate studies will be offered to a select number of qualified individuals through the program. Undergraduate recipients of the Ruperti Scholarship will study at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, the oldest continually operating maritime academy in the United States.  For over 100 years, the Academy has been preparing young men and women for exciting and rewarding careers on land and sea. Graduate students who receive the Ruperti Scholarship will study at universities in the United States identified in conjunction with LASPAU.

Applications for the Ruperti Scholarship Program are available on the LASPAU website at www.laspau.harvard.edu/ruperti.  The deadline for graduate student applications is October 15, 2009.  The deadline for undergraduate student applications is December 1, 2009.  For more information about the Ruperti Scholarship Program, please visit www.laspau.harvard.edu/ruperti.
