An online course to improve teaching and learning for Universidad de Los Andes (Chile)
by María José Alarcón

The program Engaging Students One-on-One, All At Once is a collaboration between Universidad de Los Andes in Chile and LASPAU’s IDIA Initiative based on the ideas of Peer Instruction (PI) and Just in Time Teaching (JiTT), two research-based methods to engage students to improve conceptual understanding, increase retention in courses and programs and improve academic performance.

Participating professors will also learn about a new approach to instructional design and will apply the knowledge gained to a course they teach by re-designing the syllabus to include a plan for implementing PI and JiTT.

This course, which begins on January 5, 2012, will consist of two online sessions, a number of online assignments, and follow-up activities on participants’ use of PI and JiTT in their courses and will be delivered by Dr. Eric Mazur, Balkanski Professor of Physics and Applied Physics at Harvard University, thereby directly reaching 21 professors from the Universidad de Los Andes.
