Eduardo Macagno is the founding dean of the Division of
Biology at the University of California, San Diego, where
he also occupies the Richard C. Atkinson Professor of Biology
chair. His current research deals with identified neurons
in the medicinal leech, focusing on cellular and molecular
mechanisms underlying the specification of neuronal identity,
growth cone motility and navigation, target selection, and
the generation of neuronal arbors.
Previously he sat on the faculty of Columbia University
from 1973 to 2000. In addition to holding a position as
professor of biological sciences, he also served as associate
vice president for research and graduate education and as
dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS)
from 1992 until he left. During his tenure at GSAS, Macagno
was responsible for nearly doubling the school’s annual
fund, increasing financial aid available to students, and
for expanding the number of master’s degree programs
and enhanced teacher training for doctoral candidates.
He has published papers in many distinguished scholarly
scientific journals, including the Journal
of Neuroscience and the Journal
of Neurobiology, of which he is currently
the coeditor. He also serves on review panels for the National
Institutes of Health and the National Research Council and
has received a NIH Javits Investigator award.
Macagno received a Ph.D. in physics from Columbia University
in 1968 and a B.A. in physics from the University of Iowa
in 1963.
