A primary reason that many individuals
are unable to reach their
full potential is a lack of access to
the resources and knowledge they need to
move ahead. This can be especially true for
Latin Americans who live outside major
cities.
In Mexico, the Comisión México–Estados
Unidos para el Intercambio Educativo
y Cultural (COMEXUS) addressed this issue
by expanding the traditional Fulbright–García Robles Scholarship Program
to reach talented individuals from
less-developed regions of the country. The
Fulbright–García Robles Regional Competition
Program, created by COMEXUS
in 2001, is open to individuals from 27 of Mexico’s 31 states (excluding Mexico
City and the states of Jalisco, México,
Nuevo León, and Puebla). Scholarships are
awarded for study at the master’s level at
universities in the United States.
LASPAU began collaborating with
COMEXUS on the initiative in 2008 and
is currently placing 13 grantees in degree
programs to begin in the fall of 2009. Fields
of study include anthropology, communications,
computer science, creative writing,
early childhood education, geography,
industrial engineering, journalism, manufacturing
engineering, operations research,
and visual and media arts.
