Thomas P. McDermott: An Appreciation

LASPAU is deeply saddened to note that former trustee Thomas P. McDermott died in an automobile accident on January 25, 2009, when he and two friends were traveling in Southern Argentina.

Tom was enormously dedicated to LASPAU’s mission of training future leaders throughout the Americas. This dedication went well beyond LASPAU through his service to many organizations, including ACCION International, Endeavor Inc., Pioneer Institute, American Antiquarian Society, and Rostro de Cristo. He also served as an executive-in-residence at the Institute for Latin American Business at Babson College.

Tom was on the board of Investors Financial Services Corp. and served as managing director of Ernst and Young prior to his retirement.

Above all, Tom was one of New England’s leading ambassadors of good will among the Americas, and we owe him a debt of gratitude for all he did for LASPAU and for higher education in the region. To ensure that his legacy continues, LASPAU intends to establish a scholarship in his name.
