he goal of the TALBOK™ initiative is to provide higher education faculty and administrators with standard competencies in the design, delivery, and management of high quality environments for teaching and learning, both at the institutional level and in the classroom. The initiative’s competency-based pedagogic approach integrates concepts from active, interactive, problem-based, service-based, and projectbased learning and other instructional strategies. Principles derived from research on quality management, knowledge management, leadership development, and the learning sciences frame a process where participants are first introduced to the concepts, then given a problem whose solutions illustrate the concepts, and finally take part in a dialogue that helps consolidate what they have learned.
TALBOK training—provided online or through small-group workshops—enables participants to develop the following competencies:
- Ability to implement findings from the learning sciences in the classroom
- Skill in the use of communication tools for team building and institutional change
- Ability to design an institutional environment according to the standards of the competency-based movement in higher education
- Knowledge of principles, practices, tools, and techniques for the design, delivery, and implementation of organizational and individual learning
