n May 2007, three LASPAU-administered Fulbright Program grantees were among the nine individuals selected to participate in the Fulbright-Lehman Brothers Outstanding New Leaders in Finance Program. The Fulbright-Lehman Brothers Program recognizes exceptional students studying finance, banking, and economics from among the approximately 2,000 grantees of the Fulbright Foreign Student Program studying in the United States each year. The Lehman Brothers grant provides $15,000 toward the cost of the awardees’ graduate studies and the opportunity to participate in a summer associate program at the Lehman Brothers firm in New York City. The selected grantees include:
- Luis Ignacio Gómez Moncada, Colombia, master’s degree candidate, international finance, Brandeis University
- María Adelaida Tamayo Jaramillo, Colombia, master’s degree candidate, finance, Boston College
- Judith Vanderhorst Ovalle, Dominican Republic, master’s degree candidate, business administration, Georgetown University
María Adelaida Tamayo Jaramillo, who has completed her work at Lehman Brothers, spent the first five-week rotation working on the Equity Trading Floor, which she described as “an amazing experience of living in the middle of the real U.S. finance market.”
Former Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Karen Hughes, who oversaw the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Fulbright Program, commented, “The Lehman Brothers partnership with the Fulbright Program gives young men and women from around the world an opportunity to work with some of the most successful business leaders in America. Fulbright is our flagship academic program, and this partnership will add immeasurable value to the careers of these rising young leaders.”
