As executive director of LASPAU from 1983 to 1996, Lewis A. Tyler left an indelible legacy. Lews true passion was to enable talented people to fulfill their potential. His influence on the LASPAU staff, on his colleagues in international education, and on thousands of grantees is evidence of this passion.
LASPAUs core mission was greatly advanced under Lews leadership. The number and size of programs grew significantly, and the scope of LASPAUs activities expanded as well. One of the highlights of Lews tenure was the establishment of the Trustees Fund, which was renamed in his honor when he retired from LASPAU after 23 years of service. This fund symbolized Lews commitment to enabling grantees to engage in actions of real import in their fields of study and in their home countries.
His death in May 2002 represented a huge loss to international education. But his legacy is evident not only in the fund that bears his name but also in the accomplishments of the impressive group of 2003 awardees.
