Barbara Burn: An Appreciation

Barbara Burn, a member of the LASPAU Board of Trustees from 1972 to 1975, was one of the most prominent leaders in international education, considered by many as its dean. Her recent death is a great loss to the academic community. Barbara’s accomplishments at the University of Massachusetts were unparalleled, including making international study and research a normal part of academic life for students and faculty. In her tenure as associate provost for international programs, she established dozens of relationships with leading universities throughout the world.

Barbara’s greatest contribution, however, was her service to the educational exchange community. As well as serving as a trustee for numerous exchange organizations, she insisted on the need to conduct research on the globalization of education. Her leadership inspired a range of publications that continue to contribute knowledge to the area of international exchanges, including The Journal of Studies in International Education, Frontiers: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Study Abroad, and Transitions Abroad, three journals for which she served on the editorial board.

She leaves a strong legacy in her thoughtful research and in the many people and organizations she influenced. While LASPAU, the Alliance for International Educational and Cultural Affairs, NAFSA: Association of International Educators, the Council on International Educational Exchange, the Association of International Education Administrators, Tufts University, and many other organizations will miss her, we are thankful for this legacy.
