Lawrence H. Summers (right, center), president of Harvard University, greets international Fulbright grantees studying in the Boston area at a reception at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in Cambridge. Summers addressed the grantees on the importance of international exchanges. The October 2002 reception was hosted by the Institute of International Education (IIE), with LASPAUs assistance. IIE and LASPAU jointly administer the Fulbright Foreign Student Program for the Western Hemisphere.
In July 2002, LASPAU arranged a luncheon at the Harvard Faculty Club for Carlos Quintanilla Schmidt, vice president of El Salvador, and a delegation of Salvadoran government officials. Harvard faculty and staff with an interest in El Salvador and Central America were invited to join Quintanilla for an in-depth discussion of current trends in the region.
Ronaldo M. Sardenberg, the Brazilian minister of science and technology, and a delegation representing Brazilian science and technology organizations and government agencies visited Harvard in April 2002 for a day of events organized by LASPAU and the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies. The visit, designed to encourage closer ties between Harvard University and Brazilian institutions working in science and technology, included meetings with Harvard faculty and administrators. A talk given by Sardenberg at the John F. Kennedy School of Government was followed by a lively question-and-answer session involving members of the delegation and Boston-area faculty and students interested in Brazil.
