McDermott, Rangel, and Spar Join LASPAU Board

In 2002, LASPAU welcomed three new members to the Board of Trustees for three-to-six-year terms.

Thomas McDermott recently completed a 38-year career with the international professional services firm of Ernst & Young, including five years as managing partner for the South American region. His activities today include membership on the boards of directors of public and private organizations and companies, including Acción International and The Endeavor Institute. He also serves on community boards with an international focus and is executive in residence for the Latin American Programs at Babson College.

Rafael Rangel Sostman is the rector of the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM) system. Under his leadership, ITESM has thrived, now encompassing 30 campuses throughout Mexico and over 1,000 “virtual” campuses throughout Latin America. One of Mexican President Vicente Fox’s close advisors, Rangel is also on the board of IBM Latin America, the World Bank Institute, CEMEX, and other large corporations.

Debora Spar
is a professor and chair of the Business, Government, and the International Economy Unit at the Harvard Business School, where she works on issues of business-government relations and the political environment of international commerce. Her current research focuses on issues of foreign trade and investment, particularly with regard to information-based industries such as media and entertainment. Spar’s latest book is Ruling the Waves: Cycles of Discovery, Chaos, and Wealth from the Compass to the Internet.
