Cassie Pyle, 1935-2000

In 1995, LASPAU’s Executive Director Lewis Tyler took a sabbatical semester off to teach at Harvard University. He asked Cassandra Pyle, then the chair of our Board of Trustees, to take over his role of guiding me in the development of LASPAU’s publications. Cassie’s rules for publications were so simple and made so much sense that we continue to use them to this day. According to her, publications should inform the reader of what is happening at the present time in such a way that they will still have relevance in the years to come. They should draw the reader in through an attractive yet clear design. Above all, pleasure should be taken in the creative process.

I soon saw that Cassie’s view of publications extended to other areas of her life. During the time that I worked closely with her, we found that we shared an interest in gardening. We had many discussions on how to develop a perennial garden. Choose plants that will provide blooms the first year and will continue to flourish in the coming years. Carefully plan the garden so that the colors and patterns are pleasing to the eye. Enjoy every minute of the process. Whenever I received in my LASPAU mailbox a catalog for rare and beautiful perennial plants or bulbs, I knew that Cassie had thought of me when placing an order and asked that my name be put on a mailing list.

Cassie was a guiding light in the personal and professional lives of so many people. When she died of meningococcal disease on November 5, 2000, she left behind a lifetime of work in international education. Among other contributions, she was executive director of the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, vice president for international education at the American Council on Education, vice president at the Institute of International Education, and director of international admissions and international programs at the University of Chicago. She also served on numerous panels, commissions, and boards, including two terms on the LASPAU Board of Trustees. Her wisdom will live on, but her warm and gracious presence will be sorely missed by LASPAU staff and board members, both past and present.
