The Social Security
number is the personal identification number used in the United States. You will
need one in order to:
be employed in the United States,
if you have permission from LASPAU to work; or
- earn income (other than through
your grant) through a teaching or research assistantship.
You may also need a Social Security
number to:
- open a bank account;
- file a federal or state tax return;
or
- apply for a driver’s license.
Your international student office at your host university should be able to give you more information
about obtaining a Social Security number. You may also want to visit the U.S. government's Social Security website.

Warning!
Since Social Security
numbers can be used for fraudulent purposes, do not:
- carry your Social
Security card with you unnecessarily,
- have it printed
on your checks, or
- give it out
unless required
